President Donald Trump signed an executive order today that the United States is withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council. That’s good news for pro-life advocates as the so-called human rights organization pushed for a global right to kill unborn children in abortions.
Trump said the move was done because the country’s funding is “disproportionate” to funding from other nations.
“The US funding to the UN is excessive and unfair,” Trump said while signing the order.
The so-called UN human rights group has a history of denying human rights to children before birth.

In 2012, the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva inched closer to asserting abortion as a human right when it passed a resolution endorsing a controversial new set of guidelines on maternal mortality. The guidelines were crafted with input from abortion advocates and reflect a view rejected by nations at the UN General Assembly.
The resolution, sponsored by New Zealand, Burkina Faso, and Colombia, endorsed a “technical guidance” paper by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that included abortion under the term “sexual and reproductive health rights.”
Council members opposing the resolution said, “A human rights-based approach to maternal mortality and morbidity has to respect the sovereignty of states . . . with full respect for the various religious and ethical values and cultural backgrounds of its people, and in conformity with universally recognized international human rights” which so far does not include abortion.
The UN Human Rights Council also castigated Ireland for its pro-life laws protecting unborn babies from abortion. That helped overturn the laws and usher in an era of legalized abortion.
Last month, Trump put America’s signature back on a pro-life document signed by dozens of nations worldwide confirming there is no international right to abortion.
In November 2020, 37 nations signed the Geneva Consensus Declaration, which confirms that “there is no international right to abortion, nor any international obligation on the part of States to finance or facilitate abortion.”
The United States signed the document during the Trump administration, but pro-abortion Joe Biden withdrew America’s signature during his tenure. Yesterday, President Trump added the United States back to the Geneva Declaration.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a statement about America rejoining the pro-life document.
“Today, the United States informed signatories of the Geneva Consensus Declaration of our intent to rejoin immediately,” he said. “Established in 2020, this historic declaration, led by the United States, was a joint initiative with Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, and Uganda. The group now has more than 35 signatories.”
“The Declaration has four main objectives: to secure meaningful health and development gains for women; to protect life at all stages; to defend the family as the fundamental unit of society; and to work together across the UN system to realize these values,” Rubio added.
“The Trump Administration is committed to supporting families, promoting women’s health, and protecting children at all stages of life. The United States will pursue these objectives in cooperation with member states in the UN system and through our continued shared ambition for improved health for women and girls. Investing in women’s health and well-being saves lives, allows women and girls more opportunities, and protects the family as the fundamental unit of society,” Rubio continued.
Trump’s decision to add the U.S. back to the pro-life declaration drew strong praise from a top pro-life organization.
SBA Pro-Life America President Majorie Dannenfelser told LifeNews, “The Geneva Consensus Declaration is a landmark achievement between the United States, spearheaded by President Trump during his first administration, and more than 30 nations affirming the right to life and rejecting abortion on demand.”
“Regrettably, Biden and Harris unilaterally withdrew from it and made our nation a global exporter of abortion,” Dannenfelser added. “But thanks to President Trump, we are standing with the international community for life again. President Trump’s executive action reaffirms the commitment of nations to protect their most vulnerable citizens, including unborn children, while safeguarding sovereign countries against pressure from the United Nations and others to strip those protections away. One after another, President Trump’s great pro-life victories are being restored and this is just the beginning.”
“Earlier today, the United States Mission to the United Nations confirmed that the U.S. has officially rejoined the Geneva Consensus Declaration as its 40th member nation. Their statement affirmed the Trump administration’s commitment ‘to promoting women’s health and the preservation of the family values that the international coalition as a whole, and its individual member states, support through national policy and legislation,”: she told LifeNews.
“By rejoining, President Trump sends a bold message that the United States stands with sovereign nations to defend the real health needs of women against coercive tactics by global power players. This marks the beginning of a renewed effort to advance authentic health care for women, accelerate the GCD’s momentum, and pave the way for a brighter, healthier future for women everywhere,” Huber added.
