10/9/2024 Nepal (International Christian Concern) — After an earthquake struck Nepal in November 2023, Sabita struggled to provide for her two young children.
The earthquake — which killed more than 150 people, injured nearly 400 others, and destroyed more than 26,000 homes — had devastated her remote, already underdeveloped village. Her already difficult life suddenly became unbearable.
The devastation prevented her husband’s meager income as a day laborer in India from reaching her. And since her family belonged to the lowest caste in Nepal, Sabita could not find adequate work for herself. Although her parents helped when they could, there were often days when Sabita and her children didn’t eat.
One evening, as Sabita increasingly felt isolated and hopeless, a local pastor visited her home. He told Sabita that God loves her and offered to pray for her. The pastor invited Sabita to his church, and she accepted. There, Sabita found a loving, supportive community. Inspired by the compassion she received and the teachings she heard, Sabita decided to put her trust in Jesus. For the first time in a long time, she had hope for her future.
Soon, however, Sabita’s hope was challenged. Her Hindu parents learned that she had become a Christian and stopped supporting her. International Christian Concern (ICC) learned of Sabita’s financial burden and helped her start a tailoring business.
Through the small business, Sabita can now support herself and her two children on her own. No longer feeling abandoned and hopeless, she can see that God has a purpose for her and her family.
“I come from a poor family,” Sabita said. “Poor people are the most cursed people, but thanks to God and his plan, I can have a better future. All I can say is ‘Thank you.’”
